The transitional period of the teenage years is a time of freedom, growth, and new challenges associated with independence.

Performance is expected because any teenage college-bound student must start early preparing for admission to the college of their choice. This means the never-ending pursuit of high grades and test scores. At the same time, social pressures increase, and having the right friends is essential for gaining social status.

Then, there are issues associated with dating and sex, and some teens are not prepared in a manner that allows them to make the right choices. There is also the pressure of gaining independence from parents while still depending on them for support.

Life has changed for teenagers today, becoming more complex and challenging. These changes can be emotionally demanding. Navigating this transition and being prepared for adulthood is not easy, and all teens could benefit from receiving the support they desperately need.

Teen therapy offers that support.

Gaining trust is essential for any teen therapy to be effective. As a therapist working with teens, developing a trusting relationship comes first.

They must know I am listening to their words without criticism or judgment. I also want them to know that I am here to walk with them as they navigate this period of their lives.

In my teenage therapy sessions, I use a therapeutic modality known as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT). This type of therapy helps teens reframe cognitive distortions that generate anxiety, depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders, and self-esteem issues. I have seen CBT transform the lives of teens by helping them transform negative thoughts and learn skills to manage their mental well-being.

I encourage my teenage clients to put in the work by doing their homework between sessions and practicing what they have learned. As they employ these new skills, they will feel empowered, confident, and able to manage future challenges.
